Frequently asked questions

What is MP3 ?

MP3 is a form of digital audio compression that reduces the size of audio files without drastically compromising sound quality.

What is WMA ?

WMA is Microsoft's proprietary music compression designed to compete with mp3.. The advantage of WMA over mp3 is that is claims competitive sound quality at greater compression. So a WMA music file will typically be much smaller in size than an mp3, but will sound just as good in quality. Our MP3 players will play either MP3 or WMA file types

How does it work?

MP3 and WMA eliminate sounds that cannot be heard by the human ear.

What does MP3 mean for me?

By converting your CD's to MP3 or WMA format and playing them on an MP'3 player you will be able to store multiple albums on your MP3. There is no need to carry bulky CD's as all the data can be stored on the USB drive of these tiny MP3 players.

You may also able to download songs from the internet and transfer them to you MP3 player (note there may be a download charges and or copyright restriction from the provider to do this)

How many songs can I store on an MP3 player?

As a rough guide:
- 128 mb 30 songs MP3 format or 60 songs WMA format
- 256 mb 60 songs MP3 format or 120 songs WMA format
- 512 mb 120 songs MP3 format or 240 songs WMA format

Approximate, based on number of 3.5 - 4 minute songs at 64kbps in WMA and 128kbps in MP3.

How do I copy tracks from an audio CD?

To copy tracks from an audio CD you need a CD Ripper program Depending on the speed of your CD-ROM drive and your computer, CD Rippers can operate faster than real-time. For example, a track which normally lasts three and a half minutes might only take thirty seconds to be copied to your hard disk.

What are the stages involved in getting a track from an audio CD into an MP3 file and then playing it?

  • Use a CD Ripper program to copy the track from the audio CD onto your computer's hard disk in either MP3 or WMA format. In some cases you then need to rename the file, for example from "Track 01" to the name of the artist and the track title. There might also be a facility to do this within the CD Ripper program. Some CD Rippers are available free from the internet (search for "absolutely free cd ripper" in google.com)
  • Hook up the MP3 player to your computers USB port and then download the files from your hard disk to the MP3 player. What is an ID3 Tag? Information embedded in an MP3 file, such as artist, title, track, etc.
